A pair of second-inning runs allowed Fennville to snap a 3-3 deadlock and take a lead it wouldn’t relinquish in beating Lawrence 10-6 in the opening game of a doubleheader on Thursday, April 12.
The Blackhawks were unable to keep the bats going in game two, as they were limited to a Brody Peterson single in suffering the 3-0 loss.
Matthew Sanchez led the charge in the opener, going 4-for-5 with three runs and an RBI. Peterson went 3-for-4 with two runs, while Austin Scovill was 2-for-5 with three runs and an RBI.
Nathan Spiece drove in the go-ahead run in the second inning with a groundout.
Scovill started on the mound and earned the win, allowing five runs on six hits with two walks and seven strikeouts.
Peterson took the loss in game two. He gave up three runs on three hits with two walks and six strikeouts in 4-2/3 innings.
Two days earlier, Fennville found itself on the wrong end of 10-0 and 16-1 scores in a twinbill at Otsego.
Nathan Spiece accounted for the lone Fennville hit in the first game with a leadoff double in the fifth inning. He was left stranded at second base as two strikeouts and a groundout followed as the game ended via the mercy rule.
Fennville got on the scoreboard in the top of the second inning of the second game thanks to an RBI single from Erik Korman. Ace Flores, who reached via a walk, scored the run.
Austin Scovill doubled for the other Fennville hit.
