It’s no secret that Coryne Howard is the top offensive weapon for the Fennville girls’ basketball team, leading the Blackhawks in scoring throughout the season.
So it should come as no surprise that limiting Howard’s contributions was the primary concern for Potter’s House in Fennville’s Division 3 district opener on Monday, March 4.
“They came out playing a diamond-and-1, face-guarding Coryne and forcing other girls on our team to get involved in the game early,” Fennville coach Chip Nightingale said.
Jackie James was up for that challenge.
James scored five of her 10 points in the opener quarter to help open up things for Howard as the Blackhawks prevailed by a 36-31 score in overtime.
Howard finished with a game-best 19 points, including all of Fennville’s points in overtime.
“We’ve played against some great basketball teams, but I would say that tonight we played against the best defensive team of the year,” Nightingale said. “They were so fast and strong. They also hit some crazy shots that helped them to stay in the game.”
Nightingale praised the play of Nadia Allen and Holley Laraway.
“Nadia and Holley had huge nights, keeping Potter’s House to two offensive rebounds,” Nightingale said. “They gave us a lot of energy.”
